Title: Beauty is Outside the Mirror
Size: 1ft x 2ft (each)
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Completion: December 2019
Exhibition Text:
In "Beauty is Outside the Mirror" I wanted to tell a story about finding yourself. In the first panel it's being trapped in looks and being "perfect" on the outside. In the second panel. it's finding yourself both on the outside and inside but being who you are currently. In the final panel it's finding yourself and being who you want to be. I was inspired by "Girl With Tear I", "Swimming Figure With Mirror" and "Girl with Mirror" by Roy Lichtenstein.

Inspiration
For my tryptic, I was really inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's work. The pieces that inspired me were "Girl with Tear I", "Swimming Figure With Mirror" and "Girl with Mirror". Roy Lichtenstein in the 1970's started to create a mirror series. I wanted to convey a message with using these pieces for each panel. In each panel I plan to have a mirror and having myself drift away from negative thoughts that beauty is only on the outside. While I was growing up, I have always see Lichtenstein's work at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The one I specifically saw was "Crying Girl". Lichtenstein's work has always been really impacting and always had a deep meaning to it. His work was usually defined by parody, however, I always saw a deeper meaning than a girl crying. I chose to do pop art but specifically focus on Roy Lichtenstein because he focused on painting girls and different situation they go through in daily life and their emotions. I chose his mirror series, even though only the first one is part of it because I wanted to focus on the idea of beauty and identity.
Planning Sketches
This is the sketch for my first panel. I wanted to show how the environment not only affects me but every girl. There's specific standards of being "perfect" and it's mainly focused on image and looks. I used "Girl With Tear I" by Roy Lichtenstein because I interpreted the face and tear as a mirror, except I wanted to use a modern day mirror. In this sketch, and using the mirror and trapping the eye in there, I wanted to show what it's like being a girl and hard it can be to live up to those expectations. There was a time in my life where I did think looks were the only thing that mattered and it made me feel alone and sad the majority of the time and I would overthink.
This planning sketch is for the second panel. I used "Swimming Figure with Mirror" by Roy Lichtenstein as an inspiration to this piece. I wanted this panel to represent who I am. I feel like I've always been a bit broken and I'm still trying my best to find myself. Like most girls, it's easy to feel this way and I still believe that I'm like this. I wanted to demonstrate being out of the mindset that looks are everything but being torn when you aren't confident so there's still some of you that holds onto that idea. I kept the lipstick in both panel 1 and 2 to represent outside beauty since makeup is usually an understanding for being beautiful.
For my third panel of my tryptic, I represented how I affect the environment. This is how I personally hope to affect the environment. In this sketch I used "Girl with Mirror" by Roy Lichtenstein as an inspiration because I liked how he made the girl looking in the mirror and smiling. I interpreted that she was happy and confident and that she figured out who she was. I'm still figuring my life out, and who I am as a person on the inside and I hope that in the future I can have people look at me and know that I'm confident in who I am on both the inside and outside.

Experimentation
A lot of my experimentation for my tryptic consisted of me trying to figure out how I could make my sketches from the inspiration different. Since I had interpreted the inspiration in my own way, I wanted to have the same ideas but relate it to self identity. I think I started to have it all together when I figured out the kind of mirror I wanted to draw and what I wanted to do for the second panel. I liked the distortion in the third picture, but there wasn't a way that I could change it. I decided to make each facial feature a different corner/side of the painting and keep the mirror in the same general area. When I had these ideas that's when my painting started coming together.
Reflection
Overall I really like my final piece and the pop art movement. I think the color choice in my painting was very bold yet different from the inspiration pieces. I was really surprised with the finish product just because I created lines that were pretty straight and even with the simplistic design, I was able to add depth and detail to it. I think my piece shows self identity because it talks about something I experienced and am still working on. I think each panel fit the different prompts. The first panel represented how the environment affects me and I demonstrated it well through showing how people think that beauty is on the inside. The second panel represented Who I am, in which I showed someone who was broken but still trying to figure themselves out. I showed self-identity in this panel because I demonstrated how I view myself. For my final panel, it represented how I affect the environment. In this piece I showed self-identity because I wanted to show how I changed and how I am now happy and content with beauty in the inside.

ACT Responses
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
Roy Lichtenstein's work, Girl With Tear I, Swimming Figure with Mirror, and Girl With Mirror, have inspired me to create a tryptic with a recurring idea of a mirror and how it becomes less important throughout each painting.
2)What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Roy Lichtenstein's art focused on girl's emotions that had simple backgrounds, and simplistic designs.
3)What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Throughout my research, I've made the generalization that a lot of art is usually focused around emotions and that those emotions convey a deep message.
4)What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my theme is beauty being within and self-identity.
5)What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences I've made were that art has a lot of emotion and when you're able to express that emotion, it creates a powerful piece that people tend to enjoy.
